Texas AgriLife Extension Service is an educational outreach agency of Texas A&M University. It is funded through a partnership of the United States Department of Agriculture, the Texas A&M Univeristy System, and the county commissioners courts of Texas. Each county office is supported by Extension program specialists and research scientists in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University who provide research-based information and educational materials which are then delivered by the local county faculty to citizens in their county. The mission of Texas AgriLife Extension Service is to provide quality, relevant outreach and continuing education programs and services to the people of Texas. The staff and faculty of the Denton County office of Texas AgriLife Extension Service are dedicated to accomplishing this mission in Denton County by extending the resources of the Texas A&M University System to the people of Denton County.
Texas AgriLife Extension Service focuses broadly on four major state-wide issues which all county programs across the state address in their local counties.
Texas AgriLife Extension Service is organized into four major programs areas to address the four major state-wide issues: The Agriculture and Natural Resources program provides programming for the full-time producer, the small scale or hobby farmer, supports the extensive horse industry, and addresses natural resources conservation and environmental quality issues related to land management. Strong Texas Master Gardener and Texas Master Naturalist programs extend the resources of Texas AgriLife Extension Service to their local communities throughout the county. The Family and Consumer Sciences program helps people live healthy productive lives by providing information and educational outreach programs targeting: Nutrition and Health; Diabetes Education; New Business Start-up; Family Financial Management; Food Safety; Early Childhood Development, Parenting, and Better Living for Texans. The 4-H & Youth program focuses on the development of life and leadership skills to prepare our next generation for the challenges of tomorrow. It is multi-faceted developing and maintaining strong community 4-H clubs and providing outreach education to children and youth through school curriculum enrichment programs for public, private, and home schools.
The Community Economic Development program focuses on development of social, economic, and environmental resources to strengthen local communities.
In the spring of 2004, fifty-two Denton County citizens came together under a state-wide Texas Community Futures Forum to identify the critical issues facing the people of Denton County. They determined that the most critical issues facing the people of Denton County were:
These issues are reviewed periodically by the Denton County Extension Program Council composed of citizen volunteers serving on committees, task forces, association boards, and support groups which advise the Denton County Extension faculty on program planning, implementaion, and evaluation. The Denton County office of Texas AgriLife Extension Service will continue to address the 2004 TCFF issues through at least 2008.
